The "Sunset over the Hermes" is a young adult mystery novel set on the gorgeous island of Bermuda. Terrific read. A little mystery, a little action, some romance and a nice setting. The main character Scott is a police detective who does a credible job of crime investigation which manages to affect his personal life. Its a great beach book, or possibly for one of those cold and snowy weekends when you just don't want to go outside. Maybe it will be a made for TV movie!
The positive reviews have to be friends of, or fakes by, the “authorâ€. This is, without a doubt, the worst storytelling, writing and grammar I’ve ever come across in a book. A truly painful read to get through. Although, now that I think about it, it’s almost worth reading the book as a study of how disconnected online reviews can be from reality. You’ll see reviews on products in a whole new light if you compare these to the actual book. , we need a zero star option!
My wife and I are frequent travellers to Bermuda. I enjoyed the spot on descriptions of places in Bermuda. They were very accurate. The plot was engaging, however it did drag a bit in some spots. For a first time novelist it shows good promise for future novels. I have downloaded the second book and I am looking forward to reading it.

This book is a great mystery! I loved all of the characters, especially Lily, and the plot of the story! The story kept me guessing until the very end and trying to figure out what was going to happen next! Loved it.
I've never been to Bermuda, but after reading Whicher's SUNSET OVER THE HERMES, I feel as though I've lived there! The imagery throughout the novel is breathtaking, the building suspense page turning, and the romance is perfectly sweet.
Whicher's debut novel is the perfect book to curl up with and devour over a weekend... or better yet, while basking in the warm Bermuda sun!
Simply brilliant!! This clever book keeps you wondering about who is behind everything that happens till the end. I have enjoyed so much imagining myself under the Bermuda sun, trying to figure out what was going on, and accompanying Scott Matthias all the time. It is the perfect book if you like a story with thriller, mystery, and romance. I loved it and I cannot wait to read more from its author.
On each occasion, as I started reading the books written by Whicher, I was captivated and astonished. I read the beginnings, the narrative of the vandals; and the monologue of the recluse, in which the author employs a clever device of a riddle. The initial structure, which changes abruptly into a relaxed style, is dramatic and rarely seen, in modern literature, these days.
My rating is specifically for the structure of romantic realism that gripped and jolted me, with the tension of every single word. Days after I had read the opening excerpts, the recluse's words reappeared, in their form.
I hope Whicher continues to develop and push the boundaries of his rare talent.
